Al rescate de Chambi.

Claudio Pizarro, el máximo goleador extranjero en la historia de la liga alemana tiene la mirada perdida. Lleva la camiseta de la selección peruana de fútbol y sus ojos miran hacia un punto sin destino. La imagen del excapitán de la blanquirroja es una gigantografía y promociona una tienda de prendas deportivas a dos cuadra de la Plaza de armas del Cusco. Pero la imagen daña un poco la belleza de aquella casona que hoy funge de establecimiento comercial. Oculta una placa que es histórica: en ese lugar funcionó, durante la segunda década del siglo 20 y por 40 años, el taller de Martín Chambi Jiménez, el primer fotógrafo indígena de América Latina. 
Hoy, la casona republicana de aquel puneño -pionero en desnudar la complejidad social de los andes - también se lo dividen un hostal sin estrellas y un bazar de zapatos. Y, mirando con nostalgia aquel edificio, se encuentra Teo Allaín Chambi, nieto del fotógrafo que dio luz a los rostros y rastros del Perú andino: desea recuperar ese inmueble  y crear el “Museo Martín Chambi Jiménez” y exhibir de manera permanente las más de 30 mil instantáneas que su abuelo retrató.
-                     “Es nuestro gran proyecto y venimos trabajando hace años en él”, dice, quien se encarga de rescatar, promocionar y revalorar el trabajo de su abuelo con imágenes que  ya han dado la vuelta al mundo, como la serie de “El Gigante de Chumbivilcas”,  un indígena de 2 metros 10 que posa para siempre en harapos, o “La Boda de don Julio Gadea, prefecto de Cusco (1930)”, que fuera considerada - por su juego de luces y sobras- como una de las 100 fotos emblemáticas de la historia de la fotografía por el Museo de Arte de Nueva York.
Recuperar la casona parece una tarea imposible. Sobre todo por el valor que los actuales dueños le han puesto al inmueble: un millón de dólares. Para lograrlo, los familiares están en la búsqueda de capitales extranjeros y nacionales que decidan invertir en la adquisición y la implementación del edificio. “Hay interés de instituciones foráneas. Pero falta la contraparte peruana”, dice Teo Allaín.
-         ¿Y si no recuperan en el antiguo taller?
-         Tenemos el plan B.  Buscar una nueva casa en Cusco.
-         ¿Siempre en Cusco?
-         Sí.
El museo todavía parece un objetivo a largo aliento. En el camino, Teo, ha tocado puertas pero también ha venido trabajando para lograrlo. Desde hace 22 años difunde y organiza el extenso patrimonio gráfico de Martín Chambi, y desde setiembre del año pasado viene haciendo algo loable: el proceso de digitalización de las aproximadamente 30 mil placas y negativos que conformar el archivo.
En ese camino ha redescubriendo un material inédito e inacabable. Ese que alguna vez Mario Vargas Llosa describió: “Como un mundo donde aún las formas extremas de desamparo, discriminación y vasallaje han sido humanizadas y dignificadas por la elegancia”. Entonces, el gran universo Chambi se abre paso con los clásicos retratos de un Cusco aristocrático e indígena; con sus paisajes inaccesibles o con desnudos de la época; con niñas jugando con muñecas y campesinos indigentes que son, sin duda, las estampas de un fotógrafo andino que se identifica con lo que expone.
 EL VASTO ARCHIVO. Estamos en Cusco y hace unas horas terminó la peregrinación del Señor de Qoyllur Rit’i, se inicia la festividad del Corpus Cristi y en las calles se come el Chiriuchu, platillo tradicional que consta de cuy, gallina y huevera. Hemos cruzado la ciudad para llegar al nuevo archivo donde se viene trabajando en la digitalización. Es un privilegio llegar hasta acá. Es un sitio restringido y su dirección debe ser mantenida en secreto por razones de seguridad. Su fachada se confunde con la de otros negocios, puede ser una cabina de Internet o un Laundry Service. En el interior se observan fotografías tradicionales de Chambi: “La llama y el llamero (1930)”; “Víctor Mendivil junto al Gigante (1929)”; y su famoso “Autorretrato”. La luz es tenue y los muebles son los mismos que usó el artista en los años 40. En los distintos ambientes aparecen tesoros para cualquier apasionado de la fotografía: la cámara, el retocador, cortinas, diarios, caricaturas, diplomas, cuadernos personales y autógrafos de artistas e intelectuales a los que Martín retrató: Uno de ellos, el de la poeta y activista social Magda Portal:
“A Chambi, cuya fina sensibilidad de artista debe tanto el pasado, el presente y el futuro de la más peruana de las ciudades del Perú”, Cusco, 27 de noviembre de 1933.
Otro de los recuerdos que se atesora en el archivo son los recortes periodísticos de la época. Uno del diario La Prensa de 1927 informa sobre su exposición en el Hotel Bolívar de Lima y lo califica como: “El mejor fotógrafo andino”. Y La Crónica- sobre la misma muestra- no escatima en elogios: “Chambi, como artista, es mucha cosa”. En tanto, un verso del poeta cusqueño Luis Nieto lo bautiza como “Poeta de la luz [y] corazón de bandolero con pies de chasqui que siempre quiere irse”. Son un crisol de halagos sobre imágenes en blanco y negro, sepia y oro viejo. El tiempo, ya se sabe, solo puede ser atrapado por una fotografía feliz.
En medio de ese ambiente con historia se realiza la más ardua de las tareas. Las fotos inéditas, como las que acompañan esta nota, pasan por un scanner que recibe las placas de vidrio de 18x24; 13x18; 10x15 y 9x12 centímetros. Material guardado en un apartado seco y protegido con papel libre de ácido; cada foto (previa limpieza de la placa con aire comprimido o productos químicos) se digitaliza entre seis y 10 minutos a 300 dpi de resolución, lo que asegura la mejor calidad para ser impresas. Por semana se logra visionar 120 imágenes, y en un año y medio se espera culminar con todo el proceso.
“Todos los días nos encargamos de clasificar las fotos. Según mis cálculos, solo se conoce el 30% del material de mi abuelo, el resto está por descubrir”, afirma Allaín.
NO ES PROFETA. Si bien Martín Chambi Jiménez es un fotógrafo admirado por la intelectualidad peruana y extranjera, su trabajo no es muy popular entre las masas cusqueñas. “Martín ¿quién?”, se preguntó una promotora de turismo. “No sé, no sé”, dijo otra. Está claro, su nombre no figura en las guías ni en el boleto city tour de la ciudad imperial, pese a tener una muestra permanente de 107 fotos en el Palacio del Inca Tupac Yupanqui (local que pertenece a un conocido banco) en la calle Maruri de Cusco. Sin embargo, sus fotos sí son reconocidas por los visitantes. Algunos restaurantes adornan sus paredes con imágenes del tipo “Chicha y Sapo”; ambulantes piratean sus fotos de la ciudadela de Machupicchu y las convierten en postales, pero no incluyen el crédito del autor. Esto último provocó la indignación de Teo Allaín quien hace unos días decomisó el material de un pirata.

-  “Lo que me molestó fue que no consignaran el nombre de mi abuelo”, dijo, en defensa de lo que considera justo, ya que la verdadera misión de Chambi –afirma- era fotografiar lo positivo de cada rincón que visitara y darlo a conocer al mundo. Prueba de ello es una entrevista que Martín concedió a un periodista del diario El Pueblo de Arequipa en 1958, donde reveló el real motivo de su trabajo: “Desde que empecé a tomar la fotografía en serio, mi ideal fue solo uno: dar a conocer al mundo toda la belleza natural de mi patria y la imagen tan hermosa de las ruinas que hablan de nuestro pasado histórico, con el fin de promover en lo posible, de acuerdo a mis medios, el turismo en el Perú”.
Tarea cumplida la de su abuelo, podría pensar Teo Allaín, pues las fotografías del Poeta de la Luz han recorrido las salas de Nueva York, Madrid, Paris, Londres, Buenos Aires, Chile y Lima; y sus trabajos publicados en importantes medios como Variedades y La Crónica de Perú; La Nación y La Prensa de Argentina; así como en la internacional National Geographic. Lo que siempre llamó la atención fue su capacidad para inmortalizar ese universo que aprendió en el estudio del reconocido fotógrafo arequipeño Max T. Vargas; que siguió con el fotoperiodismo en Sicuani y que luego encontró en el Cusco la madurez y estilo personal que lo han catapultado como uno de los más importantes artistas de la imagen.
Pese a todo ello, el trabajo de Martín Chambi todavía no goza de la suficiente difusión que merece para llegar ese episodio épico que el destino le debe tener reservado. La falta de recursos y personal siempre son los baches con lo que uno debe aprender a tropezarse en el camino, sin embargo, los esfuerzos están: La familia lucha por el Museo y la Fundación; el banco que exhibe sus imágenes creó una agenda con sus fotografías, y una empresa postal diseñó un matasello con su retrato.
Teo sabe que las fotos están muy bien resguardadas y que su futura publicación, en un nuevo libro o en  una sala, será un hecho. “Son un tesoro… tanto esfuerzo no será en vano”, afirma, pero sobre todo, espera llevarlas a un inmueble cusqueño que las acoja para darle el valor y la dimensión que se merecen. Y no solo nos referimos al tamaño, como en esos restaurantes que sin licencia colocan las imágenes de Chambi a lo largo de un elegante pasaje, o como en Santo Tomás de Chumbivilcas, donde exhiben la fotografía de “El Gigante” en un marco de tres metros de altura, como contundente y real homenaje de revaloración a la genialidad de este domador de la luz. Pues, finalmente, esa sería la recurrente ambición de su familia: Darle el espacio que, sienten, su historia merece.
